Finally, UP Police takes minister’s son into custody for mowing down farmers

Ashish Mishra appears before police 6 days after incident; Sidhu on fast

Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, who was finally arrested on Saturday night on murder charges in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody. A magistrate will decide on Monday, whether Ashish should be transferred to Uttar Pradesh Police custody. His arrest came five days after he was named in an FIR detailing a murder charge among others and seven days after his speeding car brutally mowed down at least four farmers protesting against a statement made by his father. The charges against him usually merit an immediate arrest and questions have been raised whether he was afforded VIP treatment because of his father. He also skipped summons a day ago.

Ashish Misra, the son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Misra, has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police after 12 hours of interrogation on Saturday for his alleged role in the October 3 violence in Lakhimpur Kheri that left nine persons dead, confirmed Upendra Agrawal, DIG, Saharanpur (Range).

According to sources, Misra has been arrested for not cooperating with the ongoing investigation by the police.

After being served a second notice, Ashish Misra, who has been accused of running over farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri, appeared before the police on Saturday to record his statement.

Many of his supporters also reached the Crime Branch office in Lakhimpur Kheri where the interrogation took place. His lawyer Awadhesh Singh was also present along with Sadar MLA Yogesh Verma.

The second notice sent by the police had asked Ashish Misra to appear before it on Saturday after he failed to do so on Friday.

The notice had also warned Ashish Misra that if he fails to appear, necessary legal action would be initiated against him.

Heavy security has been deployed in and around the place where interrogation with Ashish Mishra is going on. Barricades have been set up at each entry point. Internet services have also been suspended.

Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu is sitting on a hunger strike at the residence of deceased journalist Raman Kashyap in Nighasan area of Lakhimpur Kheri, demanding the arrest of Ashish Mishra in connection with the Lakhimpur incident. Sidhu said he will not end the hunger strike till the minister’s son is arrested. (IANS)
